The design approach for the remodelling of Ember House is to create a high quality contemporary residential building, but based on developing the existing character and materials of Ember House, a redundant 1970′s office block.
The proposal is to provide a series of micro apartments on the first three floors with a double height penthouse apartment above, with views over Winchester.
We have extended the existing brick “bookends” and added two new brick piers that create a sense of rhythm and articulation across the main front elevation. This frames the large inset balcony to the proposed penthouse apartment as well as defining the subdivision of the apartments on the ground, first and second floors.
The palette of materials is a balance in tone and texture between the brickwork (both proposed and existing) against the Eternit cladding with some coloured accents.
