Located in this hidden lane, this 1980′s detached house was asking for the rear to be “opened up” and to “capture” the amazing views down into the dell with its woodland banks and to St Katherine’s Hill and beyond.
We proposed to create one large kitchen / dining / family space by combining the existing series of small rooms with a narrow extension that aligned with the existing living room. This provided the “frame” for an 8m wide set of full height sliding doors. Internally the large island kitchen heightens the drama of the space, whilst externally the materials were chosen to compliment the existing house with a matching brick pier and render canopy.
Although only a relatively small extension the proposal required resolving a number of technical difficulties ranging from the large steel portal frame and cantilevering suspended concrete floor slab whilst working within the parameters of the existing house.
