The project started out as the simple requirement for an additional bedroom to the original “L” shaped plan house.
Wanting to capture the views over Winchester and the surrounding countryside, led us to the idea of “filling in” the “L” and creating this contemporary bay with its glass to glass corner window. The bedroom “hovers” over a new glazed entrance area with its 3.2m high oak front door that leads into the split level open plan space.
But the proposal worked in many other ways. It upgrades about a quarter of the external walls of the house and importantly in planning terms, it was not infilling any space between houses or overlooking any of the neighbouring properties.
To preserve the simplicity of the existing house form, we created a clear distinction in appearance between new and old, both externally and internally with the existing brickwork and arch left exposed in the new entrance area.
Status: Project completed.
